Spanish authorities raid narco bank
Over 4 million euros in cash seized from criminal network providing illicit financial services.
A massive international organized criminal network has been dismantled in a joint operation between the Spanish Civil Guard (Guardia Civil) and the German Criminal Bureau (Landeskriminalamt) in Hamburg. The disrupted criminal network provided financial services to various criminal organizations mainly related to drug trafficking.
During a day of action in May 2022, law enforcement officers conducted 50 house searches throughout Spain and the German city of Hamburg, leading to the arrest of 44 people of Chinese, Spanish, Moroccan, and German nationality.
The day of action also saw authorities issue 19 international arrest warrants and confiscate more than 4 million euros in cash, jewelry and 23 luxury vehicles.
Europol coordinated cross-country cooperation and sent three specialists to the scene during the day of action.
Hundreds of kilos of drugs seized
The illicit financing system was largely based on money generated from the illegal drug trade, with part of the organization sending up to 200 kilograms of hashish and cannabis a week from Spain to other parts of Europe.
On the day of the action earlier this year, law enforcement seized 98 kilograms of cannabis-with another 123 kilograms seized a few days later-a total of 650 kilograms linked to this case.
In addition, 51 kilograms of hashish were seized during the action.
